Book Collection

As I said in my last post, I got quite a few book for christmas so I thought I would take a moment to post a picture of my current collection as it stands at the moment. And I’ve just ordered a couple of AIR books as well. I have no idea why but I’m becoming a book worm, its a pity I wasn’t like this at school, sigh!

If anyone can recommend any other good books please feel free to do so, if it’s developer or design related.

It’s been a while…

It’s been a while since I’ve made a post on my blog, I’ve just been so busy that I haven’t had the chance. I know this is bad, I plan to post more now things have died down a little. First off I would like to wish everyone a happy new year, even though it’s the 23rd of January.

I’ve been busy working at Bourne, over the christmas period we moved in to new offices, I hope to post some pictures once everything’s sorted in terms of decorating and tidying up.

I’ve also been busy working on a couple of personal projects and one or two freelance projects, so it’s been all go. So moving forward today will probably have a few new posts on various topics…

There’s an app for that…

Just recently I’ve had a few debates with a couple of colleagues about iPhone’s app’s and Mobile web sites, originally I started off saying how apps can have nicer user interfaces and usually give the user a more one -to-one feeling with whatever they’re using it for. However, over the pas week I’ve come to change my mind in some ways as well… I’ll try to explain why.

Flash and Flex Developers Magazine

Flash and Flex Developers Magazine

A while a go, I saw Lee Brimelow’s post about a dedicated Flash and Flex Developers Magazine (FFDmag). So i instantly jumped on bored and subscribed. The magazine was more than useful and provided a decent read on the train to work most mornings. It seemed to drop off, and my subscription was no longer fulfilled, so I wondered what had happened to it. After two seconds on Google I came across the FFDmag site and realised they sent everything digital, and best of all free!

I personally think this is a must for anyone looking for tips and tricks, or for anyone to try and get in to Actionscript 3. The magazine seems to hit all levels, with handy code panels and also downloadable content to go with the magazine.

Although this makes it harder for me to read on the train in the morning flicking through pages on my iPhone, zooming in, then out, then in again. I can’t recommend it enough, and i’d like to give a big shout out to everyone in the FFDmag team for making this magazine in the first place, and also for taking it further in to the digital age to try and capture a wider audience.

Head over to http://www.ffdmag.com/ to get the mag.

Bourne new site launch

Bourne website

If anyone didn’t know, I work for a digital agency in Glasgow called Bourne, and this is our new site.

Flash on the Beach 09 Round up

Arriving back from Brighton on Thursday morning, it dawned on me how fast the past three days have gone, with everything whizzing by like mad. Only now have I had chance to reflect on how much amazing, inspirational and down right fucking mental shit I’ve seen.

I’ll try and provide a quick round up of the sessions I attended, and also provide links to slides, videos and anything else that came along while in there. I would also like to say, to anyone I met there and had a chat with about random mindless shit, thank you!! I can’t wait for next year.

An Update…

I recently haven’t posted any entries, probably the burden of having a blog is if you have some time off you tend to neglect it. I have had some time off, and since being back for the past couple of weeks I have been busy working on various projects which have meant I haven’t been able to update.

Not being able to update has annoyed me, there have been many things happen that I’ve wanted to blog about and put my opinion on. The recent release of Snow Leopard, Jesse Freeman (The Flash Bum) has started discussing the lack of CSS support in flash and also many of other things…

So I promise over the next few weeks there will be more posts…

Me, My setup, My Life…

Ok I thought I would take the chance to tell people about myself, show people my setup, and tell you a little about what I do.

My name is Gareth Parker, I’m a Flash Developer / Designer located in Glasgow, Scotland. I work for a company called Curious Digital, working on Flash projects varying drastically in size. I  have been working at Curious for 1 and half years after graduating from Stafford University in the summer of 2007.

I graduated not knowing what I was going to do, having a passion for design but also having a sketchy background in coding I found I was lost until I started to get in to Actionscript 3 and the Flash IDE, from then I haven’t looked back and don’t plan to either.

Mac Setup

In the images are all of my tools I use whilst I’m not in the office, my Macbook which quite frankly I want to take everywhere and would if I could, but if I’m not allowed my iPhone accompanies me anyway. Also I have my iMac which is awesome!

I am a massive Apple fan, and on both machines I have the usual tools for any Flash Developer / Designer, I mainly work in Eclipse with the Flex Builder plugin, I have only recently made the jump from the flash IDE but I don’t plan on moving back anytime soon for large projects.

The reason I use the title Flash Developer / Designer is because I tend to do both depending on the work that comes in, sometimes a fluid animation for a banner is all that is needed where as sometimes it’s a bit more complicated and I need to use Actionscript to achieve the goals I want to achieve.

Thank you!

Hello All

I thought I’d take the time to write my first post and say hello to everyone. At the moment I’m playing around with WordPress for the first time, so please excuse the random changes in themes and pages whilst I find my way around.

I will be using this blog to compose a journey through all of my findings, this will mostly be Flash and Actionscript related but there may be the odd thing that pops up that I will feel the need to post about.

Please feel free to comment on anything I post, thank you!!

Garfty!
